Junior training

The evening sessions for Junior members operate
on Thursdays in between April and October
between 5:30 and 6:15pm, but do NOT run during the summer school holidays or over the winter months.
2012 Sessions will restart on Thursday 19th April.

The age range is from 8 to 14 years.   The venue is the Downs above Crooklets Beach.   The meeting point is the Pitch & Putt hut* .

 * the Pitch & Putt hut is on Summerleaze Down midway         view junior flyer
between the Sainsbury car park and Crooklets car park.
Best to park in Crooklets car park (currently free after
    6 pm) and walk up.

We do fun games and activities based around running and running technique.   The group is normally split into two or three smaller groups and they rotate around different activities.   Parents may be asked to assist in a session.

Bude RATs takes the safety and well-being of all its runners very seriously.   With this in mind, any children who are 14 years of age and wish to train with the adult groups should seek approval from the club committee.

Only children (14 yrs +) considered to have the appropriate level of maturity and running ability as well as a nominated adult (parent/carer to run with them and look after them if required) will be approved by the club committee to run with the adult groups.

Requests for such approval can be made via either the junior coaches or any committee member, and they will pass it on to the committee.

Anyone over the age of 16 can join an adult group but should speak with a run leader first to ensure that they begin on the correct night in the correct group.

2011 report

Well what a great time the juniors have had; we have really built on our foundations from last year.   With nearly 50 juniors members we are growing and seem to be getting more and more interest.

Jane, Kate and Bridge have been working hard to plan and deliver sessions for the juniors.   We have had so many enthusiastic children that it has been a lot of fun!

Kate takes the older runners who have gradually increased the distance and intensity that they have been running and have shown great fitness improvements.

Jane takes the younger ones who play running games and have been working really hard at improving their running technique.

Congratulations must go to a number of the juniors took part in the Aviva Academy Endurance Awards:
Gold
- Amber Houghton, Tilly Daniel, Eleanor Theakston, Samual Jennings, Jackson Ward, Solomon Kemball-Dorey, Avril Lynes, Silver - Pheobe Boundy and Masie Bartrop
Step 9 - Verity Lynes and Edie Ward.

Over the last six months junior RATS have taken part in many local runs including the Bude Junior Triathlon, the Bude Life Boat Run, Bude RATS Grrr and some are also taking part in the North Devon Cross Country League.

The last session finished with a small award ceremony and the award winners were:

:
Most Improved - Sam Fox
Most Committed - Rohana Shaharadin
Best Multi-Tasker
(talking & running!) - Leisha Bond

Great RATs Random Relay - 25 September 2011

Bude RATs are lucky to have some of the most severe coastal paths in the U.K on their doorstep, so they thought it would be fun to use this terrain for an ultra relay race involving club members and guests, calling the event Grrr (Great Rats Random Relay).
The relay consisted of two, 6 Leg, 20 mile sections, one south and one north of Bude, with the option to do either 20 or 40 miles.
Some of the junior members also wanted to join in ...
        Report from Jane Cann.....

older group arriving at finish 12 Junior RATS braved the coast path as part of the Bude RATS GRRR event.

Kate Greenaway's group had a tough run from Duckpool to Bude while Jane Cann's younger group ran from Northcott Mouth and were chomping at the bit all the way.   They had so much energy they could have run back again!

On arrival the older group looked at the climb they had to make up from Duckpool and were somewhat worried about what they had signed up for.   But they were all well prepared with their Bude RATS training and completed the distance which included a number of difficult climbs in quick time and all in one piece.

Pictured - Kate Greenaway's group
Back L-R Kate Greenaway, Steve Martin, Sean Jack, Simon Theakston,
Front L-R George Hooper, Leisha Bond, Rohana Shaharudin and Zoe and Lee Martin.

The younger group which included Pheobe Boundy, Verity and Avril Lynes, Tilly Daniel, Amber Houghton, Frances Fox and Eleanor Theakston were full of excitement and energy and were even up for doing extra at the finish.

At the finish we all enjoyed squash and biscuits.   Thank you to all the parents who ran with a group or helped with refreshments.
