Training sessions

The club has two evening running training sessions each week, plus an evening junior session and a cycle ride.

Running training

We have twice weekly organised run sessions, starting from the Pitch & Putt hut (by the cricket ground on Summerleaze Down *) at 6.30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Tuesday evenings are devoted to social runs of varying length. Runners attending on Tuesdays are expected to group according to ability (with the proviso that the 'social' emphasis implies that no runner will run by themselves. Newcomers are welcome to attend for one session before joining, and will usually be accompanied by an experienced club member.

There is more structured training / coaching on Thursday evenings with experienced club members who, between them, provide support for beginners through to those competing in major events.

Where we run/train depends on many factors including the weather, wind and the abilities of those who turn up. In summer it tends to be on the cycle track or off-road, for winter evenings we are more dependent on street-lit areas.

If that is not enough.... how about getting wet and muddy too?   The Mud Rats ( a few crazy members) usually go out on a Sunday morning to scamper across Bodmin moor or through Stowe woods.   If you have not tried this sort of running before and you can run 10k comfortably, then perhaps this could be your next challenge?   It comes highly recommended!

 * the Pitch & Putt hut is on Summerleaze Down midway
between the Sainsbury car park and Crooklets car park.
Best to park in Crooklets car park (currently free after
    6 pm) and walk up.

Junior training

The evening sessions for Junior members operate on Thursdays
between 5:30 and 6:15pm.

The age range is from 8 to 14 years.   The venue is the Downs above Crooklets Beach.   The meeting point is the Pitch & Putt hut (see above).         view junior flyer

Swimming session

During Spring 2010 the RATS had exclusive use of a lane at Holsworthy swimming pool from 7-8pm each Wednesday.
With Summer now in full swing, this has been discontinued since the sea, or Bude sea pool, offer adequate opportunities for Bude RATs to get wet!

Cycle rides

Special rides:   In addition to regular weekly rides, there are occasional longer rides.   One such was on Sunday 8th August, going from Bude/Stratton to Bideford (via a very scenic route incoporating part of the Tarka Trail) and then back to Bude Stratton.

Regular rides:   This summer (as last summer) we have had a cycling group going out on Friday evenings.   Rides are taken at a relaxed pace (averaging about 10mph) but, even so, the group has worked up to doing 30 miles of an evening, somewhat surprised they have done so.   The hills around Bude grew less and less steep!

The last of these evening summer rides was on Friday 27 August as time available for a decent ride before dusk has become too short.
Instead, with effect from Sunday 29th August 2010, the weekly ride will now be on Sunday mornings, meeting at 10am in the car park at Morrisons (near the door to the main store).

Do not be put off by those mileages above; anyone is welcome to join the group.   The key aim is to get people on their bikes and enjoying the wonderful maze of quiet country roads in North Cornwall.

The main group will always go at a pace that is comfortable for the person who is feeling least fit that day, with opportunities for the faster/fitter riders to add extra loops/miles.

Also do not worry if you have an old bike - Neil carries spares for roadside repairs - and may even have bits in his shed to replace faulty parts or improve hill climbing capability.

Other rides: Some faster road rides go out from Bude on a weekly basis, including one that usually rides on Saturday mornings.
There is also a fast long road ride that usually goes out early on Sunday mornings.

If you are a mud loving RAT, there is a mountain bike ride at 6pm each Wednesday.

Contact Neil, info@budecyclinginfo.co.uk, for details of all these rides.

The Shoreline Triathlon (which Bude RATS helped marshall on 27th June is now past, however there is still the Shoreline Awesome Foursome Quadrathlon on 18th September!
